  • Kings South Africa Medal (KSA) with clasps ‘South Africa 1901’ and ‘South Africa 1902’: Scout A. Stearn Field Intelligence Department
STEARN Alfred. Born Shepreth, Cambridgeshire, England, 8.4.1876. Valet. Footman of Swaffham House (Home of Charles P Allix JP.JL), Newmarket Cambridhshire c1891. Footman at Chartwell Westerham, house of  J.E. Campbell-Colquourn, JP for Kent in 1893 receiving a testimonial. Special Constable, District No2, ‘Special’ Cape Police. Bechuanaland Rebellion 18/9697. Discharged (unit disbanded). From Schmidt’s Drift on 22.5.97 R.M. Crawford wrote: “A Stearn has served as a special constable on this section of Rhinderpest Cordon for one year and thirty days, and is discharged on removal of cordon. Conduct very good”. Enlisted (Kimberley) 26.5.97 (1 year 6 months in country – spoke English and Dutch). Third class-Private, District No2, Cape Police (No94 & 339). Anglo-Boer War; District No2, Cape Police (No339). Charged at Kuruman on 2.3.98 for ‘disobedience of orders’ – admonished. He was believed to have been a Defender of Kuruman which surrendered to the Boers after all ammunition was expended (Suspected as he was in Kuruman before and after the siege). Operations in the Cape Colony, Orange Free State and Transvaal. Second class-Private 1.7.00. Kuruman Defence Force. Scout, Field Intelligence Department. Scout, Kuruman Scouts (Intelligence Department) 27.1-22.7.02. (Kimberley) Cape Mounted Police c1904.  Looks like he resided at Vryburg c1924. Father, Charles Stearn, Tailor of Halsingfield, Cambridge. Mother, Martha Stearn.
