Cape of Good Hope Rectangular Hope Seated 1882-1883 Pale Claret 3d Stamp Double Circle Cancellation - Crown over CA Watermark

ON AUCTION IS A CAPE OF GOOD HOPE RECTANGULAR HOPE SEATED 1882-1883 PALE CLARET (PURPLE) THREE PENCE STAMP. IT HAS THE CROWN OVER CA WATERMARK. THERE IS NO OUTER FRAME LINE. IT HAS DOUBLE CIRCULAR CANCELLATION MARK.

The Cape of Good Hope's rectangular stamps, featuring a seated figure of Hope, were first issued in 1864, replacing the earlier triangular stamps that debuted in 1853. This change to a rectangular format was prompted by a suggestion from the Postmaster-General to retain the figure of Hope but in a standard rectangular shape that was easier to perforate. The new stamps kept the allegorical symbol of Hope as the central design, though the design would evolve, including a version with Hope standing, in later issues.

CAPE OF GOOD HOPE STAMPS:
The First Cape of Good Hope Stamps were the famous Triangulars first issued by the colony on 1st September 1853.
They featured the reclining figure of Hope (a female figure seen in profile) engraved by William Humphrys, an employee of the London printers Messrs Perkins, Bacon & Co. The design featured is an allegorical female figure of Hope, with an anchor, a bunch of grapes, and a ram, symbolizing the colony which at that time was seen as a literal beacon of hope for sailors.
These triangulsr stamps were still unperforated and had to be cut individually with scissors. Thus in 1860, the Capes Postmaster-General requested that future stamps be perforated. This posed technical problems, eventually resolved by Messrs De La Rue and Co, a British company that recommended changing the shape of the Cape stamps to approximate those of Great Britain (which were rectangulars). The switch to a rectangular format eventually took place in 1864.
The reclining, seated and sometimes standing figure of Hope continued to appear on triangular and rectangular stamps issued by the Cape Colony until around the late 1898, when stamps featuring King Edward VII were introduced in 1902.

HOPE RECTANGULAR ISSUES:
The 1st rectangular Hope Seated issue appeared in January 1864, with four denominations (1d, 4d, 6d, and 1s). They had an outer frame line and a crown over CC watermark.
The 2nd rectangular Hope Seated issue appeared in 1871, with four denominations (1/2d, 1d, 4d, and 5s). They had the outer frame line removed but also had a crown over CC watermark.
The 3rd rectangular Hope Seated issue appeared in 1882, with six denominations (1/2d, 1d, 2d, 3d, 6d, and 5s). They again had the outer frame line but now a crown over CA watermark.
The 4th rectangular Hope Seated issue appeared in 1884, with six denominations (1/2d, 1d, 2d, 4d, 6d, 1s and 5s). Only the 6d and 1s had the outer frame line but now their was a cabled anchor watermark on all.
The 5th rectangular and final Hope Seated issue appeared in 1893, with seven denominations (1/2d, 1d, 2d, 21/2d, 4d, 1s and 5s) and changed colours. All without outer frame line and all with a cabled anchor watermark. In 1893 a 3 denomination (1/2d, 1d, 3d) Hope Standing issue appeared also with Cable Anchor Watermark.

CANCELLATION MARKS:
In the earkly days pre 1864 before standardized datestamps, cancellations were rudimentary, often just hand cancelled, cork stamped or simple triangular or barred ovals reflecting the limited infrastructure.
From 1864 onwards major offices like Cape Town and Port Elizabeth, introduced circular cancellations featuring first single circles and later double circles with the town name and date.
