Great Cape of Good Hope stampless cover with the Ships Letter strike (SL1). Goldblatt illustrates this strike on page 40 and indicates that the earliest known strike was 1808. He says 'Masters of vessels received one penny for each letter their ship carried and delivered to the Cape post office, whilst 4d was charged by the post office for delivering the letter to the addressee.'
Wonderful, very rare item of postal history!
