Carex is a vast genus of over 1500 species of grass plants in the family Cyperaceae, commonly known as sedges. Other members of the Cyperaceae family are also called sedges, however those of the genus Carex may be called "true" sedges, and it is the most species-rich genus in the family. The study of Carex is known as caricology. All species of Carex are perennial and typically have rhizomes, stolons or short rootstocks, although some species grow in tufts. Carex species and cultivars are popular in horticulture, particularly in shady positions. A delightfully attractive ornamental grass with thin, ‘hair like’ arching, silvery green leaves that looks best in mass plantings, Carex comans Green grows to a height of 30-35 cm.
