MADE IN ENGLAND
Carlton Ware Art Deco orange lustre Gondola in the Garden pattern number 3478 - another of the wonderful HOLLYHOCKS designs by Violet Elmer.
Multi-coloured hollyhocks on an orange lustre ground.
Vintage from circa 1930 - 1934.
Marked on the base with the Carlton Ware script backstamp as well as the pattern number 3478 and the factory order number.
It seems unlikely that Carlton Ware's designer Violet Elmer, a young woman from Oxford and from a relatively humble background, would have been aware of outré high-end Paris fashions. We can say, however, that Miss Elmer is more than able to create dramatic, avant-garde work and is up there with the best of the modernists.
What is most extraordinary is that Carlton Ware was so adventurous in introducing what must have been highly risky designs at the time.
HOLLYHOCKS = Alcea is a genus of about 60 species of flowering plants in the mallow family Malvaceae, commonly known as the hollyhocks. They are native to Asia and Europe. The single species of hollyhock from the Americas, the stream bank wild hollyhock, belongs to a different genus.
Sold as seen in the images. Images form part on the description.
