Drosera binata Seeds

Drosera binata is the only species of sundew with forked leaves and is New Zealand's largest representative of the genus. Plants begin growth in early spring from a resting bud on the surface of the soil. The erect leaves grow rapidly unfurling like fern fronds and reach full size (to 30cm tall) after the first one or two leaves. Often the first leaves are forked only once but in some forms may eventually fork 6 times forming 12 leaf tips or points. Plants may flower several times from late spring through to early autumn. The scape reaches 2-3 times the height of the leaves and forks several times near the top bearing up to 25 white, white tinged with pink or yellow/green flowers 11-22mm across. In autumn the leaves slowly wither and die leaving only the resting bud behind, which can withstand frosts and occasional snow.

Habitat
Peatlands and bogs, seepages, lake margins, drainage ditches and poor sandy or clay soils.
Distribution
Common throughout the North, South and Stewart Islands below about 1000m alt. Also found on the Chatham Islands as well as many smaller offshore islands. Also found in South, Eastern and Western Australia and Tasmania.
