The Carob tree is native to the Mediterranean region. It produces dark brown edible pods that are often used as a chocolate substitute. It is a hardy, drought tolerant tree, suitable to hot, dry regions like the Karoo, Namaqualand and Northern Cape.
Carob powder is extensively used in a wide range of products like baby foods, dog treats, home cooking and baking, milkshakes and smoothies, energy snacks, snacks for diabetics etc.
