Joseph Hellers Catch-22 (first published 1961) is a blackly comic masterpiece of absurdity, bureaucracy, and war. Set in a U.S. bomber squadron during the Second World War, it follows Captain John Yossarians desperate attempts to survive military madnesswhere escaping combat duty is itself proof of sanity, and thus disqualifies one from exemption.

More than an anti-war novel, Catch-22 is a profound satire on modern institutions, the circular logic of power, and the human struggle to remain sane amid systems built on contradiction. Its title entered the language as shorthand for any no-win situation, a testament to Hellers genius for capturing both tragedy and farce.

About the Author:
Joseph Heller (19231999) was an American novelist and playwright. Known for his sharp wit and moral seriousness, he followed Catch-22 with works such as Something Happened and Good as Gold. His fiction reflects a persistent engagement with the absurdities of modern life and the failures of authority.
