Cauldon hand painted cake plate 1904-1920 Ref.P28
Cauldon was originally owned by the Brown-Westhead, Moore and Co which operated from 1862 until 1904, when, having gone into liquidation, the company was bought by the pottery Pottery entrepreneur, Harold Taylor Robinson in 1905. The distinguishing name, Cauldon was kept until 1920 when Robinson went on to acquire a number of other companies.J. A. Robinson & Sons Ltd and its many subsidiary companies was merged into Cauldon Potteries Ltd and this was followed by the acquisition of Coalport China (John Rose & Co.) Ltd in 1924. By 1932 companies under the Cauldon Potteries umbrella included Allertons Ltd, Brown-Westhead, Moore & Co. Ltd, Robinson & Leadbeater, Arkinstall & Son, J. A. Robinson & Sons, Ltd, G. L. Ashworth & Bros, Ridgways (Bedford Works) Ltd, F & R. Pratt & Co. Ltd, Grindley Hotel Ware Co. Ltd and W. H. Goss Ltd. Quite an empire!
Robinson’s businesses, especially those exporting to North America suffered from the effects of the Great Depression and in 1932 Cauldon Potteries Ltd was placed in receivership by its debenture holders.
This is a beautiful, hand-painted and hand coloured porcelain cake plate, dating somewhere between 1904-1920, and still in excellent condition, showing predominantly roses mixed with other flowers and having a gilded, embossed rim. There are no scratch marks, chips, discolouring or wear to the gilding, and, I doubt whether this plate was ever used. It has a diameter of 22cm and stands 3 cm high.
