Cecil Rhodes and the Princess by Brian Roberts

A first edition of Cecil Rhodes and the Princess by Brian Roberts, published in 1969 by Hamish Hamilton. This fascinating historical biography explores the strange and scandalous relationship between Cecil Rhodes and Princess Catherine Radziwill, whose obsession with Rhodes led to one of the most notorious episodes in South African colonial history.

Roberts draws on extensive research to tell the story of the wealthy empire builder and the mysterious Polish princess who followed him from Europe to South Africa, eventually descending into intrigue, blackmail and imprisonment. Illustrated throughout, Cecil Rhodes and the Princess remains an important and sought-after work for collectors of Rhodesiana, South African history and colonial biography.

This is the original 1969 hardcover edition in its original dust jacket. The red cloth boards with gilt lettering remain in very good condition and the binding is sound. The dust jacket is poor, with heavy wear, tearing and loss to the edges, but it has preserved the attractive period design. Internally the book is clean and presentable.
