The Central London Railway, known as the Twopenny Tube, was a deep-level, underground "tube" railway,opening in 1900 and operated between Shepherd's Bush and Bank. The line later became known as the Central line.

Early Underground railways developed their own source of power generation by building power stations. The Central London Railway Power House at Wood Lane, in west London generated electricity at 5,000V AC which was converted at sub-stations along the route to 550V DC to power the trains via a third rail system.  It was one of the earliest to generate at such a high voltage and could produce up to 8.95 megawatts.
