This is an exquisite CERAMIC decorative platter, meticulously hand-painted in the historic Gouda style. The piece is uniquely shaped like a chestnut leaf, featuring vibrant, flowing floral and foliage motifs in earthy autumnal tones. The handle of the leaf is accented with a gold-tone finish, adding a touch of mid-century elegance to the rustic design.
PROVENANCE AND HISTORY The inscription on the base, "108. KASTANJE HOLLAND", identifies this piece as part of the "Kastanje" (Chestnut) series. This pattern was popularised in the 1950s and 1960s, likely produced by PLATEELBAKKERIJ FLORA or a similar contemporary of the Royal Zuid-Holland factory.
"Plateel" is the traditional Dutch term for the high-quality glazed earthenware for which the city of Gouda became world-famous. While early 20th-century Gouda was known for dark, matte Art Nouveau designs, the mid-century "Kastanje" era moved towards lighter, more organic forms that celebrated Dutch nature and botanical life. These leaf-shaped dishes were specifically designed as "bonbonnières" or side platters, serving as both functional tableware and collectible art.
