CFR Heckmann - Original Oil on Canvas - De Nieuwe Plantatie Manor - 1932 (currently Grande Roche Hotel, Paarl).
The painting of de Nieuwe Plantasie was commissioned by the du Toit family, owners of the estate in 1932. The estate's heritage dates back to 1717 when a grant of land was given to Hermanus Bosman who sold it to the du Toit family. The estate was later reclaimed by the state in the 1960's/70's.
Today Grande Roche is situated on the site of the old De Nieuwe Plantatie in the Drakenstein valley of Paarl. It was finally restored to its original Cape Dutch splendour after careful research in 1991 and transformed into a luxury hotel. In 1993, the fastidious restoration was acknowledged when the Grande Roche Estate was declared a national monument.
