Daar het hy skoolgegaan en in 1896 beklee hy sy eerste betrekking - klerk in die plekbesprekingskantoor van 'n Londense stasie (Euston). Die gebonde lewe het hom benoud gemaak, en toe hy dit ná twee jaar nie meer kon uithou in die kantoor nie, vlug hy weg na die see. In 1899 het hy sy eerste besoek aan Suid-Afrika gebring, en toe hulle in Januarie 1903 weer hier kom, het hy weggeloop van die boot af.
