Although the presence of sculpture has become commonplace in many public parks and gardens elsewhere in the world, when Arlene Traub made the proposal for this sculpture exhibition in Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens almost two years ago it met with my cautious response. In a garden (like trees and plants) three-dimensional sculpture with its different forms, shapes, planes, colours and textures, also has a life and presence, having the effect of organising, enclosing, exposing and focusing the space it displaces and occupies.
