Abstract Landscape - 90x59cm (two small tears)

1948 born in Netherlands
  Born in the Netherlands, Charles Gassner came to South Africa in 1948 after studies in Berlin and The Hague. Between 1950 and 1953 he lived in Australia before returning. His paintings are mainly of abstracted landscapes and despite the titles, often non-figurative. Like his older contemporary, the German-born Hans Hartung, Gassner's works have a calligraphic quality with darker lines and brushstrokes on a lighter ground. His seeming spontaneity is strictly disciplined.
