CHARLES SMYTHE - PIONEER,PREMIER AND ADMINISTRATOR OF NATAL

H/C,

275 PAGES,

BLACK AND WHITE PHOTO'S,

FAREWELL TO THE HIGHLANDS' is not a biography of the Hon. Charles John Smythe so much as a record of his achievements; I have not attempted to analyse his character, or assess the value of his political wordk. The book is intended to take the place of the autobiography he planned to write when he retired from his post as Administrator of Natal.

Mr Smythe died before he had completed more than a few pages of his life-story, but he left behind a set of diaries (hithertounpublished) and many letters covering the period 1868 to 1918, which are valuable Africana. I have quoted from the diary and letters as extensively as possible in tracing the career of this successful pioneer-farmer and politician, and have sketched in the background history for the benefit of anyone unfamiliar with it.

Readers may disagree with some of Mr Smythe's views, but they should remember that these are views which were expressed fifty-five to a hundred years ago. Neither his descendants living today, nor I as his editor, neccessarily share his opinions.
