Presenting a truly endearing vintage ceramic figural decanter, crafted in the whimsical shape of a sad-faced basset hound. Standing approximately 26cm tall with a base diameter of about 10cm, this lovable canine, with its long, droopy ears, expressive eyes, and a comically sticking-out tongue, is depicted clutching an empty mug. The white base of the decanter is adorned with musical notes and the timeless, humorous phrase, "How Dry I Am," perfectly capturing its forlorn yet charming expression.
This delightful piece is indeed a musical decanter. It is wound by gently turning the Basset Hound figure, and once activated, the base serves as a pedestal while the hound slowly rotates to the accompanying music. Research suggests these musical decanters were often produced by Sankyo of Japan, a company well-regarded for its musical movements.
The decanter is made from ceramics and is in good vintage condition overall, with no chips, cracks, or crazing to the ceramic body. The musical mechanism is in working condition; however, it does show some wear and is not as stable or tight as it once was, resulting in the hound tilting slightly to one side as it rotates. Please note that the original stopper, which was in the form of a cap with a bird sitting on top, is unfortunately missing.
This "How Dry I Am" basset hound is a highly collectible item for enthusiasts of vintage barware, novelty decanters, and canine-themed memorabilia. Despite the wear on the musical mechanism and the missing stopper, its iconic design, working musical function, and undeniable charm make it a fantastic and unique addition to any collection or as a distinctive decorative piece for your home.
