This is a comic novel set in Moscow during the early 1980s. The book explores the drabness and human degradation of Soviet society, with Moscow ironically nicknamed "Chekago".
The story follows Sasha Biryusov, a heavy-drinking garbageman at the bottom of Moscows social scale, whose life takes an unexpected turn when an American named Bobby Weston proposes marriage. This event not only transforms Sashas life but also impacts the lives of his fellow tenants in his communal flat.
The novel was widely praised upon its release in 1988, receiving positive reviews from critics and going into multiple editions. It was also translated into Portuguese for a Brazilian edition.
