Info:
Augustus John, a once much-loved artist here plunges into talking about his life and the many people he has known, mainly through his portrait painting. He turns out to be an engaging host, who seems to have known everyone and whenever possible puts his impressions on to canvas.
Augustus Edwin John OM RA (4 January 1878 31 October 1961) was a Welsh painter, draughtsman, and etcher. For a time he was considered the most important artist at work in Britain: Virginia Woolf remarked that by 1908 the era of John Singer Sargent and Charles Wellington Furse "was over. The age of Augustus John was dawning."
He painted portraits of many of the leading European personalitiespoliticians, society ladies, and literary figuresin a slick and somewhat superficial style, occasionally recapturing his former boldness and integrity of form. His most significant portraits include those of novelist James Joyce, playwright George Bernard Shaw, cellist Guilhermina Suggia, and poets Dylan Thomas and William Butler Yeats as well as the famous Lawrence of Arabia painting.
His work is held in the permanent collections of many museums worldwide, including the Museum of New Zealand, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, the British Museum,  the Museum of Modern Art, the University of Michigan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the National Museum Wales, the Detroit Institute of Arts, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
