This is an eight-sided folded-waist blue and white teacup of the late Qing Dynasty, dated from 1821 to 1911 (the Daoguang to Xuantong reigns). It was mostly produced during the Xianfeng, Tongzhi and Guangxu periods between 1851 and 1908. One side is painted with chrysanthemums and plum blossoms, and the reverse side with orchids and bamboo, the classic theme of the Four Gentlemen. The cobalt blue is soft and subdued with free hand-painted brushwork. The interior is covered with plain celadon glaze, and the base shows distinctive spiral turning marks of folk kilns of the late Qing Dynasty. With a neat small shape and an 8-centimeter diameter, it is comfortable to hold. The cup is intact without cracks or repairs. As an antique daily porcelain from the Qing Dynasty, it carries ancient charm and solid collectible value.
