Description: Chinese Famille Rose (Quin Dynasty) Porcelain Plate. Circa 1750-1780. Ref. P/96
Maker: Unknown
Date: Estimated 1750 - 1780
History: Famille-rose enamels (meaning the pink family) were introduced around 1720 for the decoration of porcelain. The name given Famille-rose originated with a French scholar around 1862 and has been used extensively to describe this particular porcelain. These enamels were opaque to semi-translucent and were excellent for decoration. The pink tones were usually the dominant colours and was due to a red oxide colouration. However, yellow, green and purple colours also appear. Famille-rose started appearing on the European market in the early 18th century and in large quantities.  Europe had never seen such fine porcelain! Known as foreign colours by the Chinese it is possibly these colours were due to the influence of the Jesuits visiting the Imperial court
Description: An interesting overglazed Famille Rose plate showing a centre bouquet of flowers in shades of pink and purple. Surrounding this central bouquet we see two light fringes of lambrequins (typical of the French influence ) in an orange colour with some gilding, and a further eight sprays of flowers, with some gilding still evident, on the plate rim.
Condition: For its age, it remains in fairly good condition although a rough rim with small chips is evident. There is also a star shaped glaze crack to the underneath but this does not penetrate to the top. The decoration remains in fair condition with signs of wear to the central bouquet. Some of the gilding has worn away as to be expected. The usual glazing pit marks associated with this time period are evident on the front and back of the plate.
Dimensions: The diameter of the dish is 23cm and the height 2.5 cm
