Offered for sale is a pair of small Chinese porcelain Foo dogs in a vibrant turquoise glaze dating to the mid 20th Century. The figurines are well modelled with detailed grotesque faces and bodies with open work/fret work detail. The Foo dogs are traditional Chinese mythological creatures in fact modelled on lions referred to in Chinese as Shi and used as protector figures at the entrances of temples, homes and dwellings. The figurines are traditionally depicted as a pair of male/female figures representing the Ying/Chang dynamic with the male figure having a raised right paw balancing on a ball representing the world and the corresponding female figure with a raised right paw resting on a puppy representing the female aspect of nature and a nurturing instinct . There are no makers marks or impressed marks on the base . Size of Foo dogs is as follows : height 11.5 cm ; length measured across the base front view 4cm ; width of base side view 3cm cm.
