Chinese Water Chestnut (4 Chestnuts packed in Soil)

Chinese water chestnut is a grass-like sedge native to Asia, tropical Africa, and Oceania. It is grown in many countries for its edible corms. The water chestnut is not a nut but rather an aquatic vegetable that grows in marshes, under water, in the mud.

Fresh Chinese Water Chestnuts are fantastically flavourful and downright fruity: sweet and nutty and tart all at once, like a cross between a coconut and an apple, with the texture of an Asian pear.

You can just eat the peeled water chestnuts as snacks. You can use whole, peeled water chestnuts to make bacon wrapped water chestnuts, a more refreshing and cheaper alternative to bacon wrapped oysters. You can slice them to make some crunchy meatballs or a quick stir fry.
