"Pantocrator" means "All-Ruler." This icon shows Christ as Creator, Savior, and Judge. He looks right at us in compassion, but demanding a response. His hand is raised in blessing. He holds the book of the Gospels, the good news of salvation for all who will receive Him.

The look of Christ Pantocrator has hardly changed in the last 1,500 years. Most early images of Jesus were destroyed during the Iconoclastic controversy (726842 AD). The icons of Christ Pantocrator in Cappadocia churches, dating to 8501100 AD, are among the oldest surviving artistic depictions of Jesus.
