Ten New Statues on the West Front of Westminster Abbey
A short guide to the statues of ten martyrs placed on the west front of Westminster Abbey. In 1998, the hitherto empty niches between the window and the west door were filled with statues of ten martyrs who died for their Christian faith. The statues were designed by Tim Crawley and include: Grand Duchess Elizabeth, Manche Masemola, Maximilian Kolbe, Lucian Tapiedi, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Esther John, Martin Luther King Jr, Wang Zhiming, Archbishop Janani Luwum, and Archbishop Oscar Romero.
One of the statues is of South African Manche Masemola who was an Anglican catechumen from South Africa who was killed by her animist parents at the age of 16. She had refused to stop visiting the missionaries who came to her town to convert them to Christianity. Manche had said that she would be baptized in her own blood.

Contains comprehensive biographical information and photography of the statues themselves
Description
Commissioned in 1998, the ten statues immediately above the west door of Westminster Abbey were intended to demonstrate that, despite common perception, the twentieth century was a century of martyrdom. The figures also represent the many others who have died under similar circumstances of oppression and persecution in recent times.
The ten figures were selected from every continent and many Christian denominations, and include those who struggled for human rights, victims of Nazi and Soviet persecution, and the brutalities of World War II. The martyrs include notable historical figures such as Martin Luther King Jr, Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Oscar Romero. This booklet tells the stories of these ten people, their faith and the enduring significance of Christian witnesses.
