Offered for sale is a charming and nostalgic oil on board by listed and highly esteemed South African Artist Christopher Haw (born 1941). The painting is undated but was most likely executed in the 1960's or 70's judging from the vintage period gilt wood frame with fabric clad inner mount board. The subject is 6 young boys river rafting in a gorge or ravine sitting on a metal drum and propelling themselves with long canes or reeds. This is a fine art work in the artists mature style of Impressionistic plein air painting. It is a painterly and boldly executed work with a masterful treatment of bright sunlight and cast shadows. The colours are subtle mostly earth tones and pinks ,predominately featuring the rocky quartz or sandstone ravine which is the backdrop to the figures. The style is reminiscent of British late 19th century / Edwardian artists such as Henry Scott Tuke with a romantic and idealistic interpretation of innocent and unspoiled youth in nature.
