AN ORIGINAL OIL PAINTING OF AN AFRICAN VILLAGE WITH AN EXTENSIVE MOUNTAINSCAPE IN THE BACKGROUND, PAINTED BY FAMED SOUTH AFRICAN ARTIST C J SHRUBSOLE (c 1910). YOU WILL FIND SOME BIOGRAPHICAL DETAILS OF THE ARTIST FURTHER IN THIS DESCRIPTION. IT IS FRAMED IN A VERY NICE WOODEN FRAME AND IS IN GOOD CONDITION, WITH ONLY SOME NORMAL AGE BROWNING WHICH ACTUALLY EMPHASISES IT'S ANTIQUITY.

C J SHRUBSOLE EMIGRATED TO SOUTH AFRICA (DURBAN) FROM ENGLAND IN THE 1880s. HE WAS A DRAUGHTSMAN BY OCCUPATION BUT WAS ALSO QUITE A PROLIFIC ARTIST WHOSE FAVOURITE SUBJECT WAS SHIPPING AND PARTICULARLY THE DURBAN HARBOUR. SOME OF HIS PAINTINGS ALSO DEPICT NATAL RURAL AND ETHNOLOGICAL SCENES. HE LIVED IN SOUTH AFRICA UNTIL THE EARLY 1920s, AFTER WHICH HE RETURNED TO ENGLAND. HIS PAINTINGS FOUND IN SOUTH AFRICA WERE MAINLY PRODUCED FROM ABOUT 1910 - 1920. WORKS BY HIM CAN BE FOUND IN SEVERAL MUSEUMS AND PRIVATE COLLECTIONS, INCLUDING SEVERAL IN THE 'OLD HOUSE MUSEUM' IN ST ANDREW'S STREET, DURBAN.
