Clivias thrive in bright, indirect light or dappled shade and require well-draining, humus-rich soil. They prefer to be slightly root-bound in small pots. Water only when the top few cm dry out in summer, and provide a cool, dry winter resting period to encourage blooming.

. Light and Temperature

  • Light: Native to the forest understory, clivias require dappled shade or bright, filtered indoor light. Avoid harsh, direct midday sun, which will scorch and burn the leaves.
  • Temperature: Protect from heavy frost and freezing temperatures. They grow best between 10°C and 25°C.
  • Winter Rest: To stimulate spring blooming, move the plant to a cooler, unheated area (around 10°C) from October to February and reduce watering.

2. Soil and Potting

  • Soil: Use a loose, rich, well-draining mix. A great DIY substrate includes two parts orchid bark, one part standard potting soil (or ericaceous mix), and one part perlite.
  • Containers: Choose a pot that leaves only about 2.5 cm of space around the plant's roots, as clivias bloom best when pot-bound. Do not repot frequently.

3. Watering and Feeding

  • Watering: Keep the soil slightly moist during the active spring and summer growing season. However, always allow the soil to dry out significantly between waterings, and use less water in winter.
  • Fertilizer: Apply a half-strength, balanced liquid fertilizer (like a 3:1:5 or 2:1:2 ratio) every other watering during the active growth phase..
