Cobaltoan calcite, also known as "cobalt calcite" or "pink calcite," is a stunningly beautiful mineral that is highly sought after for its vibrant pink to purple coloration. It gets its colour from the presence of cobalt in its crystal lattice structure, and is often found in association with other minerals such as copper and silver.

Katanga province, located in the south-eastern region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), is known for its rich copper deposits. The Katanga copper belt, which stretches for over 250 kilometres between Lubumbashi and Kolwezi, contains 72 economic deposits of copper and cobalt, with four large mining centres. The region has been a major producer of copper for over a century, with copper mining playing a significant role in the country's economy. Some of the largest copper mining operations in the region include the Kamoto Copper Company (KCC) and the Mutanda Mining Sarl, both of which are owned by Swiss mining giant Glencore.
