Cocus Palm (Syagrus romanzoffiana)
Description
The widely cultivated palm is native to South America and is the most southerly growing palm on that continent. It is tall with a solid, single trunk and large head of long, feathery leaves. Suiting mild-temperate to tropical climates, it prefers an open, sunny situation and tolerates some frost. It has very large bunches of yellow fruit and the flesh and seeds are edible. Seed germinates in 2 to 4 months (Don and Anthony Ellison, Cultivated Palms of the World, 2001)
