In the 1950s and 1960s, the artistic director of the Urs Graf Verlag publishing house was the eminent thinker and scholar of antiquities, Titus Burckhardt. Under his direction, Urs Graf Verlag embarked on the publication of a series of facsimiles of ancient hand-made manuscripts, such as the Book of Kells and the Ilias Ambrosiana. These productions were of such high quality technically and intellectually that they were highly acclaimed by both experts and the wider public. All the Urs Graf facsimiles were limited editions much prized by collectors, but they were also acquired by museums and by the major libraries.
The Lindisfarne Gospel Codex, created in the 8th century contains the four gospels of the New Testament Bible - Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. It is a 1200 year old, hand-made illuminated manuscript, which is housed in the British Museum.
The Urs Graf facsimile for sale here, is a complete reproduction of the original codex, bound in vellum with tipped-in colour plates. Only 680 copies were produced.
When permission was granted by the British Museum for Urs Graf Verlag to go ahead with the production of the complete facsimile, a decision was also taken to organize a comprehensive study by a panel of experts to cover all aspects of the Lindisfarne Gospels. The accompanying commentary volume contains the results of the exhaustive study they conducted. The result is a triumph of classical scholarship.
