2002 large format hardcover with dust jacket and 190 pages in very good condition.
On 25 August 1685 an expedition left the Fort of Good Hope with its primary goal to locate the copper mines that were said to exist far to the north, in the country of the Namaqua. While the expedition was not an economic success it provided ancillary benefits, of which the collection of watercolours in this book is one. One of the copies of drawings from this expedition is the volume of watercolours in the Library of the South African Museum, Cape Town, known as the Codex Witsenii. It was made in 1692 for Nicolaas Witsen, a leading citizen of Amsterdam and a director of the Amsterdam Chamber of the VOC.
