The obverse design of the Sacagawea Dollar was selected from 120 submissions from artists around the country. It depicts the Native American Sacagawea carrying her infant son Jean Baptiste on her back and honours her work in helping Lewis and Clark in their journey across uncharted America.
The coin is a distinctive golden colour but contains no gold, contrary to a common belief. It is made of a composition of brass and manganese with a solid copper core. A number of 22 karat gold specimens were made, however, at the West Point Mint on the coin's first year of issue in 2000.
