Coir is a natural fiber extracted from coconut husks,
Coir does provide a suitable substrate for horticultural use as a soil-less potting media and for aquaponics and hydroponics.
Coir is a good substitute for sphagnum moss in horticulture because it is free from bacteria and fungal spores, and produces good results without the environmental damage caused by peat mining.
Coir can also be used as a substrate to grow mushrooms
Coir is also useful to deter snails from delicate plantings, and as a growing medium in intensive greenhouse horticulture.
A mixture of coir, vermiculite, fine bark and potting soil can be used as a planting medium for seedlings
