Coleman 1955 Model 249-299 Sunshine of the Night Made in Canada With Rare Brass Fount Green Ventilator

A VINTAGE MAY 1955 COLEMAN MODEL 249-299 SINGLE MANTLE LANTERN. CALLED THE SUNSHINE OF THE NIGHT IT WAS MADE IN TORONTO CANADA. IT HAS A RARELY SEEN BRASS FOUNT AND GREEN VENTILATOR. NO GLOBE OR MANTLE BUT THE GENERATOR (TUBE USED TO VAPORIZE THE LIQUID KEROSENE) AND PREHEATER CHAMBER TO HEAT UP THE GENERATOR ARE IN TACT.

THE COLEMAN KEROSENE MODEL 249 MODEL LANTERNS WAS MADE IN MANY COUNTRIES LIKE THE USA, ENGLAND, AUSTRALIA. IT WAS MADE IN TORONTO CANADA STARTING IN 1930 AND ENDED WITH MODEL 249D IN 1966 AND MODEL 249E IN 1970.

TIP CLEANER ROD: This model is an older model that still has a tip cleaner rod on the side. With newer model lanterns, the tip cleaning function is built into the fuel valve. The generator is a hollow brass tube where our gasoline or kerosene is heated to point where it turns to vapor. The end of the generator, called the gas tip, has a very small hole that shoots the gas vapor into the lantern's burner. You can imagine how dirty this little gas tip gets after a few hours of intense heat and dirty fuel running through it. To clean the gas tip the tip cleaner rod has a needle on one end (the tip cleaner) that pokes through the gas tip when turned. With newer models, when you turn the valve counterclockwise, the tip cleaner pokes the gas tip for you.

PRE HEATER CAP: One hundred-or-so years ago, Coleman pressure lamps were considered to be torch lighting. The "torch" was actually a cloth swab shaped like a pitch fork that was dipped in alcohol and set ablaze to pre-heat the generator prior to lighting. A little alcohol was put in the preheater cap and ignited to heat up the generator. As time went on the size and/or shape of the generator changed to allow pre-heating with one or two stick matches, rather than the bulky torch.

MARKINGS AND AGE: AS SEEN FROM PHOTOS JUST UNDERNEATH THE LOGO COLEMAN THE SUNSHINE OF THE NIGHT MADE IN CANADA ARE TWO LETTERS. ON THE LEFT A NUMBER 5 AND ON THE RIGHT THE NUMBERS 55. AS I UNDERSTAND THIS MEANS MADE IN MAY 1955. Sunshine of the Night appeared on various models and was not limited to only the model 249.

SIZE: 30CM HIGH WITHOUT HANDLE 12CM DIAMETER FOUNT

CONDITION: WITH EXSPECTED AGE RELATED WEAR. SOME PAINT CHIPS AND ABRASION. SOME SURFACE RUST. THERE IS STILL A LITTLE KEROSENE IN THE TANK. THE PRESSURE PUMP MOVES UP AND DOWN AND FOUNT CAP OPENS EASILY. TIP CLEANER ROD IS STIFF AND I DID NOT TRY TO FORCE IT. THIS LANTERN IS SOLD AS IS, AND UNTESTED. BUT WITH SOME RESTORATION IT COULD BE IN FULL WORKING CONDITION.

HOW DO THE PRESSURE LANTERNS WORK: All the pressure lanterns take a pressurized liquid fuel and convert that fuel into a gas vapour (via the generator tube) and then they burn that gas vapour in an controlled manner to produce a small and hot flame.

HOW TO DATE YOUR COLEMAN: Most Coleman® lamps and lanterns manufactured in the United States and elsewhere after 1925 or so have a manufacturing date stamped on them, either on the bottom (after 1951 in USA) or on the side (before 1950 in USA). You will see two sets of numbers; the number on the left is the month and the one on the right is the year of manufacture. The year will be shown as a single digit for appliances built in the 1920s and early 30s. Somewhere around 1931 this changed to double digit year markings.

THE COLEMAN COMPANY INC (1913-present): The Coleman Company, Inc. is an American brand of outdoor recreation gear reknowned the world over for especially their lanterns. The company's new headquarters are in Chigaco but it still has their famous facilities in Wichita Kansa and in Texas. The well-known Coleman lamp was invented by 1909 and the lantern in 1914, and since that time more than 50 million of the lanterns have been sold throughout the world. They are now owned by Newell Brands an American company as well and their items are still made in the USA although some of the globes are made in Germany and China.

KEROSENE: Ultimately, kerosene (liquid heating oil) is a type of paraffin. Kerosene, or paraffin, is a combustible hydrocarbon liquid which is derived from petroleum. Similar to gasoline but kerosene is less flammable. Gasoline has a much lower flash point than kerosene, which means it is more prone to ignite and is more dangerous to handle.
