Offered for sale is a collectible /rare Hamburger's pottery/ studio pottery vase designed by Jurgen Hamburger and made in Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape circa early 1960's. This is a slip cast earthenware vase with a sprayed or hand painted exterior in an off white vellum coloured enamel which contrasts beautifully with the broad unglazed collar and interior of the vase and the raised decorative nodules on the sides on the vase. The base is signed with the artist monogram and the pattern number imprinted into the clay.A similar example is illustrated in Wendy Gers seminal book Scorched Earth, a history of the commercial pottery studios in South Africa which has a chapter devoted to Hamburger pottery . She observes that stylized plant motifs feature prominently as decorative elements in Hamburger pottery, particularly plants and fruit from the Albany district of the Eastern Cape including prickly pears, pineapples, Proteas and fynbos .
