Offered for sale is a highly collectible stoneware platter by South African master potter the late Hyme Rabinowitz (1920-1990), a highly rated and renowned pioneer studio potter from the Cape. Rabinowitz was born in Namaqualand in 1920 ; he worked with Esias Bosch at White River in the early 1960's and also received mentorship from the famous British studio potter Michael Cardew at Wenfordbridge Cornwall in 1966/67. From the late 1960's he was based in the Cape working from a farm called Eagles Nest in Constantia . This item is a medium sized stoneware platter possibly intended as a cheese board or trivet but also of course highly decorative as a wall hanging if not in use ; the broad rim of the platter has two small circular piercings indicating the platter was intended to be suspended via a rope or wire strap. The platter is glazed in a thick off white/ buff colour and decorated with a sprig of grass or wheat loosely painted in a pale sky blue glaze ; the motif is repeated on the rear of the platter. The platter has a pale blue border accentuating the round form and off-setting the hand painted motif of grasses. The base has an imprinted mark / stamp with the artists initials HR contained in a circle. This item probably dates to the 1970's or 80's. Hyme Rabinowitz was awarded an honorary MA Fine Arts from UCT in 1992 and numerous other awards for career excellence as a ceramicist and potter including the accreditation of Master Potter from the SA Association of Potters/Cultural History Museum 2002.
