Offered for sale is a fine and rare Japanese Awaji Art Deco ceramic vase dating to the 1930's . Awaji ceramics take their name from the island of Awaji where these pieces were made; the last kilns on the island closed in the late 1930's so these items are not easy to come by. Awaji pottery was made for export to Europe and the Americas and consciously emulated fashionable Art Deco and Art Nouveau trends in styling. This vase is made from a buff coloured earthenware approximating stoneware and glazed in satin finish black on the exterior with a motif of frangipani -like flowers in pale yellow pink and white . The flowers are left in reserve against the background black colour and glazed in pale enamels.. The vase has an elegant urn shaped form with a slightly flared neck and a round base. The base of the vase has faint imprinted marks reading made in Japan . The vase is medium sized 21cm high and 12cm wide at the shoulder . Awaji pottery commands high prices on the international auction circuit and has become hugely fashionable and collectible in Europe and the USA particularly with high end interior decorators and collectors in New York, London and Paris.
