Offered for sale is a collectible Midcentury Modern MCM ceramic vase made by the South African manufactory Lucia in Boksburg on the East Rand of Johannesburg circa 1950's. This is a rare , hard to find shape with the form/ serial number 601 impressed on the base together with Lucia Ware, the manufacturer. The low production code number suggests this piece was made relatively early in the history of the company which produced ceramics from the late 1940s until the early 1960s. At its height Lucia had more than 3000 registered shapes/forms in its catalogue and was indisputably the most prolific and commecrially successful of the Midcentury South African decorative ceramic manufacturers. This item is slip cast and made from a buff off white coloured clay glazed in a dark Sherwood green/moss green for which the company is famous. The shape is an unusual boat form with a slanting asymmetrical undulating rim, fluted sides and an oval foot. The glaze is even and well applied and the body has clean crisp definition without the irregularities and glaze flaws that sometimes mar Lucia pieces. Postage is R100 via Postnet or R140 for courier delivery to major cities in SA. Collection is welcome from Emmerantia Jhb.
