This is a set of four medals. Description from left to right as follows:
(1) 1939 - 45 STAR
1945 - Second World War 1939 - 45. British and Commonwealth Services. The ribbon has equal stripes of dark blue, red and light blue symbolising the Royal Navy, Army and RAF respectively. The 1939 - 43 ribbon was authorised in November 1943 and worn by those awarded this proposed Star which became the 1939 - 45 Star when finally issued.The medal is bronze and 44 mm in height with the maximum width of 38mm. The six-pointed star has a circular centre with the GRI/VI monogram, surmounted by a crown and inscribed THE 1939 - 1945 STAR round the foot.
(2) AFRICA STAR
Africa 1940 - 43. British and Commonwealth forces. The ribbon is pale buff symbolising the desert sand, with a broad red central stripe, a dark blue stripe on the left and a light blue stripe on the right symbolising the three services. The medal is bronze and the height is 44 mm with the maximum width being 38 mm. The description is as above but inscribed THE AFRICA STAR. Awarded for entry into an operational area in North Africa between 10 June 1940 and 12 May 1943.
(3) WAR MEDAL 1939 - 45
1945 - Second World War 1939 - 45. British and Commonwealth forces. The ribbon has a narrow red stripe in the centre, with a narrow white stripe on either side, broad red stripes at either edge and two intervening stripes of blue. The medal is cupro-nickel or silver and it is 36 mm in diameter. On the obverse of the medal is the effigy of King George VI; on the reverse a triumphant lion trampling on a dragon symbolising the Axis powers. All fulltime personnel of the armed forces wherever they were serving, so long as they had served for at least 28 days between 3 September 1939 and 2 September 1945 were eligible for this medal.
(4) AFRICA SERVICE MEDAL
1943 - Second World War 1939 - 45. South African Forces. The ribbon has a central orange stripe, with green and gold stripes on either side. The medal is silver and 36 mm in diameter. On the obverse is a map of the African continent, inscribed AFRICA SERVICE MEDAL on the left and AFRIKADIENS - MEDALJE on the right; on the reverse is a leaping Springbok. This medal was awarded to Union service personnel who served at home and abroad during the War for at least thirty days. Medals were fully named and gave the service serial number of the recipient, prefixed by various letters. No prefix indicated a white volunteer.
