A little about Samuel Mordan
He is actually credited as the inventor of the first patented mechanical pencil.
In 1822, he filed a British patent with his partner John Isaac Hawkins for a pencil with an internal mechanism that allowed the lead to be extended as it wore downwhat we now recognize as a mechanical or propelling pencil. Shortly after, Mordan began manufacturing them under his own name, and S. Mordan & Co. became synonymous with high-quality silver and gold mechanical pencils throughout the 19th century.
They produced everything from simple retractables to ornate novelty designsmany now highly collectible, especially when hallmarked and in working condition like yours.
