Rare collection of four original antique Chinese Buddhist paintings, depicting scenes circa 10th century.
The bid price is for all four paintings together - see enlarged images below.
The paintings was bought from a deceased estate in SA. The market price is estimated according to its rarity and antique historic value.
The paintings are in good original condition, mounted on board. (Were framed behind glass, but frames and glass removed for assessment and transport).
The paintings depicts Chinese Buddhist monks hiding in mountains and caves during a period of persecution by 4 Chinese Emperors from 5th to 10th centuries.
The Buddhist monks were persecuted, because Buddhism was foreign and the monks didn't pay taxes. They were stripped of possessions like the heavy golden ear rings they used to wear.
The paintings show the monks all with long ears but no ear rings. Also seen is the Chinese four clawed dragon, a tiger - monks were said to have power over
wild animals. The Buddha himself is shown playing with children, dark Chinese monks are also shown and other interesting facts of that time.
