AN BEAUTIFUL LARGE 21.65 CARAT DEEP PURPLE AMETHYST GEMSTONE WITH A BEAUTIFUL OVAL CUT. COMES WITH A BEAUTIFUL PERSPEX PRESENTATION CASE AND VELVET BAG.
 
THIS PARTICULAR STONE WAS BOUGHT FROM A SELLER IN SOUTH AFRICA IN 2011 WITH THE COUNTRY OF ORIGEN INDICATED AS BRAZIL. IT HAS A VVS (EYE CLEAR) CLARITY WHICH MEANS IT IS FREE OF INCLUSIONS AS SEEN WITH THE NAKED EYE WHICH IT APPEARS TO BE. IT WAS ALSO SOLD AS A TREATED GEMSTONE WHICH MEANS THE COLOR WAS ENHANCED IN A LABORATORY.
 
IT EXHIBITS A COLOR SHIFTING AND COLOR CHANGING AFFECT DEPENDING ON THE AMOUNT OF LIGHT THAT IS AROUND THE STONE AND THE LONGER IT IS IN SUNLIGHT. IT SEEM TO SHIFT FROM A PINK TO PURPLE TO ALMOST BLACK. PLEASE SEE PHOTOS.
 
TESTS PERFORMED: SCRATCH TEST: IT DID SCRATCH A GLASS WINDOW PANE WHICH WOULD INDICATE IT IS HARDER THAN GLASS. (MOHS HARDNESS AMETHYST 7.0 GLASS 5.5-6.5)
UV LIGHT TEST: NO REACTION AS IT SHOULD BE FOR AMETHYST. (When electrons are excited by a source of radiation, they jump to a higher energy level around the nucleus of the atom. The excited electron remains in this excited state for a short period of time until it falls back to its original ground state. As the electron returns to its ground state, it emits energy either as heat or as visible light (fluorescence). ONLY 10% OF GEMSTONES EXHIBIT AN FLUORESCENCE AFFECT LIKE RUBIES, SAPPHIRE, TOPAZ, OPALS AND DIAMONDS. GLASS AND ALL QUARTZ VARIETIES DOES NOT SHOW A UV AFFECT.
GEMTESTER TEST: NO GEMTESTER TEST PERFORMED. (These testers separate gemstones from one another based on their thermal conductivity or the rate at which electricity or heat transfers through the stone and are very accurate.)

AMETHYST:
In antiquity, the most valuable gems were known as the cardinal gems. They included Diamond, Emerald, Ruby, Sapphire and Amethyst. These were the gems most valued for their rarity. Amethyst no longer appears on this list. What happened? The answer is that extensive amethyst deposits were discovered in South America in the early 19th century, and Amethyst was no longer regarded as a rare gem.
Historically, fine Amethyst came from the Ural Mountains in Russia and in Germany. Both of these deposits are now exhausted. Very large deposits were discovered in southern Brazil in the early 19th century, with subsequent discoveries in nearby Uruguay. In the 1950's high quality amethyst was found in Zambia. The Zambian Amethyst has acquired the reputation as some of the finest in the world due to its unusually rich color. However, the Zambian amethyst is mainly found in smaller sizes, with stones over 10 carats counting as very rare.
Amethyst occurs in primary hues from a light pinkish violet color to a deep purple color. Many amethyst collectors search out the deepest purples they can find. The darker purples are highly prized.
For a gem which was once regarded as precious as Sapphire, Amethyst is very affordable, even at the higher grades. It's quite a durable gem and is suitable for all kinds of jewelry.
