Colourful Raku Hippopotamus.

Raku art pottery refers to handmade ceramic figurines often colourful and characterized by unique crackled or metallic finishes from the Raku firing process, originating primarily from South Africa where they are a popular souvenir and collectible, featuring distinctive hand-painted details and unique patterns. These artistic pieces capture the unique textures and colours from the reduction firing in combustible materials, making each hippo sculpture a one-of-a-kind art object.

The distinctive look comes from removing pieces from a hot kiln and plunging them into combustible materials (like sawdust or newspaper) to create smoky, vibrant, and unpredictable effects. You can expect to see iridescent flashes, crackles (crazing), metallic sheens, and earthy tones.

The figurine was handcrafted and signed by an artisan in South Africa, often as part of a community project that employs local people. This piece is numbered either 955 or 556. Making each piece a distinctive studio art piece.

Made in South Africa, These items are vintage and can date back several decades.
