Comfrey plants are easy to keep, excellent companion plants to most vegetables. They create a nutrient rich mulch as their roots go deep down to extract nutrients. Their roots also loosen the soil for your veggies and they help retain moisture in the soil so you have to water less often.
Not only are they good for heating up the compost pile and making sure that your fruits and veggies contain all the nutrients, but they are also excellent for your skin. The leaves can be made into a poultice to soothe irritated skin and eczema. Their roots are used to aid in healing bones especially in the elderly. Although some might say you can drink a tea made from the leaves, the alkaloids present in the roots and leaves may be harmful to your liver. That is why I include the plantain. It has all the goodness of the comfrey without the alkaloids. You can use it as feed for rabbits, goats, sheep, cattle and also enjoy it yourself. Raw or cooked. As it has most of comfrey's properties, it is also excellent to use as a poultice on the skin to extract thorns, treat stings and scrapes.
Comfrey and plantain will grow in most soil types. They grow more prolific when compost is added, but it is important that it drains well as neither of them likes to be waterlogged.
