Bulk dried herb, used externally in treatment of cuts, bruises, sprains, sores, eczema, varicose veins and broken bones. Used internally in the treatment of a wide range of pulmonary complaints and internal bleeding. Contains a cell proliferant that speeds up the healing process.

Symphytum officinale is a perennial flowering plant in the family Boraginaceae. Along with thirty four other species of Symphytum, it is known as comfrey. To differentiate it from other members of the genus Symphytum, this species is known as common comfrey or true comfrey. Widely adapted and easy to grow, comfrey (Symphytum Officinale) originated as a woodland wildflower of Europe and Asia. Various medicinal uses for comfrey date back 2,400 years.

In folklore, comfrey roots were used in traditional medicine internally (as an herbal tea or tincture) or externally (as ointment, compresses, or alcoholic digestion) for treatment of various disorders, including commonly as a treatment for reducing the pain of osteoarthritis.

Dosage:

Internal Use - 1 teaspoon of dried herb infused into a cup of hot water. Strain and drink. Sweet with honey to taste if required. Used externally in poultices and ointments.

Cautions:
  • Do not use if you have a known allergy to any of the ingredients - if allergic reaction occurs discontinue use.
  • This plant contains small quantities of a toxic alkaloid which can have a cumulative effect upon the liver, causing liver toxicity. Largest concentrations are found in the roots, leaves contain higher quantities of the alkaloid as they grow older and young leaves contain almost none. Most people would have to consume very large quantities of the plant in order to do any harm, though anyone with liver problems should obviously avoid using this herb internally.
  • Use topically on unbroken skin.
  • May cause loss of appetite, abdominal pain, vomiting if used internally in excess.
  • Do not use with Eucalyptus.
  • Do not combine with herbs containing pyrrolizidine alkaloids (e.g. agrimony, alpine ragwort, help, tansy, ragwort).
  • Do not take internally during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
