Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2, Yuri's Revenge sets a new standard for expansion packs in both what it adds to the game and how it changes the way you play it. The world is once again on the brink of apocalypse. Yuri, the brilliant and powerful psychic warrior, has rebelled against his former Soviet masters and launched his own scheme to control the world. He's armed with cruel technologies, exotic weapons and mind-controlling devices that have enslaved entire cities.
In single play, gamers can choose to command the Allies and crush this new threat to freedom, or choose to lead the Soviets and punish this would-be usurper of the Soviet global vision. In multiplayer mode, you'll command Yuri's devastating army using devious weapons based on forbidden technologies: psychic thought, genetics and cloning. See your brutes flip over tanks with their bare hands, unleash your dominator and control scores of enemy troops, or use a virus to infect opposing forces foolish enough to resist you. With 10 new cooperative missions, gamers have more interesting options than just fighting head-to-head. An improved multiplayer and tournament interface will make it easier than ever to find opponents and allies.
Both the Allied and Soviet armies get new, powerful weapons. The Allies boast a Robot Control Center and Chrono Prison. Amongst the new Soviet weaponry is the Siege Chopper and Boris, a machine-gun-toting commando that can call down laser-guided bombing strikes. The high-quality in-game movies tell the story of Yuri and his insidious plot. The popular characters of Red Alert 2, such as Tanya and Romanov, are back to wage war in cities around the world, including London, Cairo and San Francisco.
At the end of Red Alert 2 the Soviet threat was vanquished and Yuri, the Reds' psychic warrior fled. Now he's back in his own mission pack and as it says on the tin, he's out for revenge. To this end he begins building a network of Psychic dominators with the plan of turning the good ol' US of A into a race of mindless automatons, eager to do his bidding.
The allies manage to hold Yuri off in San Francisco just long enough for Einstein to propel you back through time to try and change the course of history. Both sides will battle against Yuri and try and avert his psychic domination of the world, but if you play the Soviet campaign, your mission will not only be to stop Yuri, but also restore Mother Russia to its former glory.
The add-on pack offers 14 new single-player missions, (seven for each side) although you won't be able to control Yuri's forces in the single-player game, you can in multiplayer and skirmish games. As well as the new missions you get new units on both sides. The allies have gained the Guardian GI, an infantry unit capable of attacking armoured vehicles (rather than just being run over by them) it can also take out air targets with its mid-ranged rocket launcher. In defence against Yuri's Psychic Dominator, the allies also have robot hover-tanks that don't require "human" pilots. As well as these there is an upgrade to the phenomenal, Mammoth tank--the Battle Fortress that also doubles as a troop carrier.
The soviets on the other hand begin the game at a disadvantage seeing as when Yuri scarpered he took some of their technology with him, but they do have the Industrial Building, which substantially increases unit production efficiency and a Spy Plane, Boris, (basically Tanya but with more facial hair), the Siege Chopper and the Battle Bunker which holds up to five conscripts. This is a great add-on for an entertaining game and shows that the Command and Conquer franchise is still very much alive and kicking. --Kensington Walsh
