In 1899 Deneys Reitz, then aged seventeen, son of Chief Justice (later President) FW Reitz of the Orange Free State, enlisted in the Boer army to fight the British. He was involved in such major actions as the battle of Spion Kop, and met the young Winston Churchill as a prisoner of war in Pretoria. The straightforward narrative of his experiences is both a classic of true-life adventure, and an unforgettable picture of mobile guerrilla warfare.

'A book which General Smuts justly called "wonderful".'
