The text "Herdenk die Voortrekkers" translates from Afrikaans to "Commemorate the Voortrekkers".

This knife was created to mark the 100th anniversary of the Great Trek, a mass migration of Dutch-speaking settlers (Voortrekkers) from the Cape Colony into the interior of what is now South Africa between 1835 and the early 1840s. Similar knives were often made in Solingen, Germany.
